At twenty-six, Xiao Yang had grown weary of the cutthroat games of office life. Sick of the endless bustle, he escaped to a place far from the city.
There, he met Yuan Fan, a spirit unlike anything of the worldly realm, born of the grasslands.
He said he was a spirit of the grasslands, the guardian deity of this mountain.
He possessed the untamed wildness unique to the grasslands. Xiao Yang wanted to take him away, to bring him back to the city, but Yuan Fan shook his head and said he did not belong there. Even if he went back with him, his soul would return to the grasslands.
In that moment, Xiao Yang understood: Yuan Fan belonged neither here nor to him.
Yuan Fan walked into the mountains. This time, Xiao Yang knew he would not look back. Someday, he would cross the vast Pali Grassland of Shigatse and return to Xiao Yang's side.
Xiao Yang guarded the place day and night, never straying far. If he heard a distant call, "Yuan Fan, please come back to me," he would answer it. He said, "Xiao Yang, don't cry. When the prayer flags dance again, I'll come back to you."
