What made her special was that he secretly loved her, while she was his friend Guan Mingzhang’s girlfriend.

So he carefully hid his feelings, only stealing an unobtrusive extra glance at her whenever they met at a gathering.

Later, when he heard that Tian Yi and Guan Mingzhang planned to marry after she graduated from college, Xu Yuanshen shut himself in his room, drank all night, and decided to give up.

But the day before graduation, Guan Mingzhang dumped Tian Yi.

The next day, Xu Yuanshen showed up at her door with her favorite flowers.

His handsome face wore a gentle smile. “Happy graduation.”

Kaixin, seated in the audience, was in tears.

In her senior year of high school, Tan Pei transferred back to Jialan County to prepare for the college entrance exam. There, she ran into Nan Xun, the idol she had admired as a child.

He had just gotten into a fight. Blood marked his body, and a cigarette hung from his fingers. Through the drifting smoke, she saw the fury in his eyes.

Tan Pei was shocked. She couldn’t accept that the once-illustrious golden boy had become a street thug.

Everyone said no one could control Nan Xun, that he was a bad person and she should stay away from him.

Tan Pei didn’t believe them. She turned around and walked into his home.

Nan Xun lifted his shirt to inspect the wound on his abdomen and said coldly, “Get out.”

Tan Pei stepped forward to bandage him. Nan Xun grabbed her wrist, his tone hostile. “Didn’t you hear what they said? I’m no good.”

Tan Pei: “I don’t believe it.”

Nan Xun shoved her away. “Get lost.”

Tan Pei stubbornly replied, “After I finish treating you.”

Later, Nan Xun gained a little shadow who followed him everywhere.

He couldn’t shake her off or get away from her.

The little shadow boldly declared, “From now on, I’ll look after you.”

That night, Nan Xun cornered her in a dark alley. “What are we to each other that makes you think you can look after me?”

“What would we have to be for me to look after you?”

Nan Xun’s expression was unreadable.

Tan Pei clutched the hem of his shirt and said in a trembling voice, “Would girlfriend be enough?”

Nan Xun had said goodbye to many people in his life. Once they left, they never came back.

He had always felt he was someone without hope, unable to see the future or return to the past, able only to trudge onward beneath the burden of blood debts.

Until he met Tan Pei again. She seemed fragile, yet had a strong will. She was not only kind, but had a sharp edge too.

She was the only person who had left and come back, and was even willing to stay by his side.

Much later, as Nan Xun looked back on those terrible days, he asked himself why he hadn’t pushed Tan Pei away in the end.

Looking at her peaceful sleeping face beside him, Nan Xun smiled.

Perhaps it was because when she was by his side, even if the dust stretched endlessly, the light was infinite.
