Jiang Mengqiao, a mediator at the neighborhood office, transmigrates into a novel called Six Doors Work Log and becomes a supporting character who shares her name.
In the book, the original Jiang Mengqiao is a highly skilled constable in Six Doors. But every partner assigned to work with her ends up honorably injured, every bandit hunt comes up empty, and not a single criminal is caught. The team's monthly performance ranks dead last, earning her the title of Six Doors' biggest jinx.
After transmigrating into the book, lazy, slow-witted Jiang Mengqiao, whose martial arts skills are nonexistent, is shoved into the role of a constable.
She's assigned to partner with He Yu, Six Doors' annual top constable for three years running.
Jiang Mengqiao happily latches onto He Yu and coaxes him into making a pinky promise with her.
Jiang Mengqiao holds out her hand. "From now on, we have to be partners for life."
He Yu curls his lip in disdain. Though he humors her halfheartedly, he still offers his hand.
After sealing the promise, Jiang Mengqiao thinks: This is a sure thing. I'll never have to worry about food or clothes for the rest of my life.
Unexpectedly, Jiang Mengqiao sweeps away the gloom and transforms into a lucky charm.
On her daily patrols, she just happens to resolve disputes among the common folk. On every assignment, she catches criminals through a series of coincidences. The team's performance climbs to first place.
Her colleagues go from avoiding her to fighting for the chance to be her partner.
Jiang Mengqiao is living the good life, picking names from a roster in Six Doors every day.
Which handsome guy or pretty girl should she patrol the streets with today?
Every colleague eagerly hopes she'll pick them. Only He Yu keeps a cold expression.
She used to admire him so much and said she'd be his partner for life.
How did she suddenly change her mind?
[Mini-scene]
Jiang Mengqiao tugs on He Yu's sleeve, pointing at a house with a terrified expression. "The criminal's in there! Chief He, hurry and catch him!"
He Yu sneers. "You're a constable too. Why don't you go?"
"With my feeble cat-like kung fu, how could I compare to your superb martial arts, Chief?"
He Yu seems to cheer up a little and nods with satisfaction. He charges in with his saber, but when he comes back out with the criminal, he sees Jiang Mengqiao happily chatting with Captains Zhang, Wang, and Li, discussing where to go for roast lamb tonight.
He Yu's face darkens at once. He tosses the criminal in front of the three men and says, "You three, take this criminal back to Six Doors."
The three men sigh regretfully, tell Jiang Mengqiao they hope to go for roast lamb with her another time, then leave with the criminal.
Jiang Mengqiao gazes at the sky, mourning the roast lamb she's missed. Then He Yu says in her ear, "Come on, Xiao Jiang."
"Huh? Where are we going?"
"Didn't you want to get roast lamb?"
