I Picked Up a Mad, Obsessive Villain

After Xu Shengwan learns that her aunt and uncle intend to marry her off to the Marquis's lazy, good-for-nothing heir, she makes two decisions:

First, run away with her valuables. Second, take along He Zhiyuan, the blood-soaked boy she once found in a deserted alley.

She can't get far without money, and it would be even better to have a young guard by her side for protection.

So she flees in the dead of night with her valuables and He Zhiyuan, a skilled martial artist.

Xu Shengwan plans to have He Zhiyuan escort her to Jincheng. Once she's reunited with her parents, she'll pay him for his services, and they'll be even.

Who could have guessed she'd discover along the way that her young guard, He Zhiyuan, is actually a deranged, possessive assassin who kills without batting an eye?

Help!

But He Zhiyuan listens to her, so for now she sets her worries aside.

They reach Jincheng safely, and she finds her parents. Jian Yao gives He Zhiyuan a generous payment, thinking that should settle things between them.

But that very night, the Imperial Guards surround the Xu family home, three ranks deep. The guards illuminate the courtyard with their torches, and in the firelight, He Zhiyuan approaches Xu Shengwan step by step, dressed in a bright yellow imperial robe.

When he reaches her, the guards kneel on the spot and cry out in unison, "We welcome His Majesty and Her Majesty back to the palace!"

Xu Shengwan: ?

How did the notorious, ruthless killing fiend from all the rumors suddenly turn out to be the emperor?
