Zheng Zhiwei, the second daughter of the Zheng family in Hong Kong, is about to marry the third young master of the He family’s third branch.
They’ve known each other for ten years, from school days to wedding plans, and are about to have a spectacular wedding that everyone will envy.
Meanwhile, rumors say Zheng Jiaqi, the Zheng family’s eldest daughter, will form a powerful alliance through marriage with the head of the prominent Shen family in Haishi.
It should have been a double celebration. But one Zheng daughter is the child of Mr. Zheng’s late wife, while the other is the illegitimate daughter Mrs. Zheng had with her hooligan boyfriend after getting pregnant out of wedlock when she was young and naive.
The eldest daughter, Zheng Jiaqi, is the true heiress by any definition, yet now she’s expected to marry far away on the mainland for the sake of the family.
Just as the weddings were drawing near, a news story set all of Hong Kong ablaze:
[Scandalous swap! Mr. Zheng’s legitimate eldest princess is being married off to a mainlander, while Mrs. Zheng’s illegitimate daughter becomes the rich family’s young mistress]
All of Hong Kong watched the half-sisters’ drama unfold, envying Zheng Zhiwei for her good fortune.
Before the uproar could die down, the Hong Kong media broke another story:
[What a joke! Fate takes a wild turn: Zheng Zhiwei’s dream of becoming a rich man’s wife is shattered, and she’s stuck with her mainland brother-in-law, while Zheng Jiaqi happily marries her rich brother-in-law]
Zheng Zhiwei, who was supposed to marry into a wealthy family, was about to take her sister’s place and marry far away instead. People speculated that father and daughter had joined forces to plot the whole thing, all to banish the second daughter, Zheng Zhiwei, whose status was improper and whose claim to the family was questionable, and set things right.
Everyone was waiting to see how this fake phoenix, really just a country chicken trying to marry her way into the upper class, would leave Hong Kong’s high society in disgrace.

At the He family patriarch’s birthday banquet, Shen Yunli witnessed a melodramatic engagement breakup involving three people. One of them was someone his family had arranged for him to meet as a potential match.
That prospective match announced she was pregnant with her brother-in-law’s child. The only victim resolutely called off the engagement and fled the scene in tears.
That night, the biggest victim of the farce knocked on his door.
The young woman’s eyes still glistened faintly with tears. Facing the tall man, she wore a composed expression, but her dense black lashes trembled slightly, betraying that she wasn’t as fearless as she seemed.
“Mr. Shen, would you be interested in choosing an obedient, sensible fiancée?”
-
Zheng Zhiwei wasn’t particularly fond of men who were tall and burly. They looked intimidating, were hard to control, and wouldn’t listen to her.
So she didn’t think she could possibly like a man like Shen Yunli, but that didn’t stop her from liking his money and status.
After they married, she saw the man’s remarkably well-developed chest and abs many times. Zheng Zhiwei thought, now that they were married, wouldn’t it be a waste not to make full use of him?
-
At first, Shen Yunli thought his little wife was a child who had been deprived of love and forced to live under someone else’s roof. She was always cautiously watching people’s expressions, so he ought to patiently forgive her no matter what she did.
At some point, he began letting her boss him around however she pleased.
Before you read:
1. Ten-year age gap, with a size difference. They marry first and fall in love later, but they don’t get married at the start. The hero is not the sister’s fiancé: that was a misleading tabloid rumor. The heroine knew at the time that they weren’t engaged; she only thought the two families might arrange a marriage for their mutual benefit and wanted to get in first before anything was confirmed. There is no ethical issue.
2. The heroine is not a virgin, but the hero is. She did everything with her first love. Her fiancé is not her first love, just a stepping stone she uses.
3. The characters aren’t perfect. There’s a lot of romance and very little career plot, almost none at all.
3. The setting is entirely fictional, the worldbuilding is made up, and everything serves the plot. Cantonese appears early in the story. I’m not a professional, so it has been polished with a translation tool and may contain errors. Please don’t read if that bothers you.
