Book smart vs Street smart
Synopsis:
Chu Ci, a liberal arts graduate from a prestigious university, is unemployed right after graduation. Lured by the idea of living off her parents, she returns to her hometown in confusion and discovers that the "dumb kid" she dumped years ago has become the local "king of connections."
All those years of study, and nothing to show for it. Her "cultural capital" is useless here. Chu Ci is ready to take down the "capitalists" who exploit everyone!
After their first proper meal together in years, Wang Hanwen walks Chu Ci home.
Chu Ci looks at his Dior suit, Hermes belt, Jaguar logo, and LV keychain. The whole getup is so ostentatious it's laughable. "I had no idea you were such a nouveau riche."
He pretends to straighten his tie, then deliberately raises his wrist to show off the oversized logo on his watch, giving his cuff a shake as if he were walking a red carpet.
"I'm not that rich," Wang Hanwen says, stretching his neck as if the tie makes him look especially respectable. "This is nothing. You studied in a big city, so you must see brands like these everywhere. I bet you're used to them by now."
Then he spins his car keys in his palm with a loud jingle, making sure she notices.
"Uh, you've misunderstood," Chu Ci says after a pause. "When I called you nouveau riche, I wasn't emphasizing the rich part."
"Then what were you emphasizing?"
"The nouveau part!"
On a dark, windy night, he speeds all the way back.
Wang Hanwen returns to the mahjong parlor, tosses down his car keys, and lights a cigarette with a dark expression. His buddy asks how it went. He'd rushed back in the middle of the night without even getting license plates, just to show off.
He ponders it, smoking half a cigarette. He remembers how, in high school, he'd pedaled more than ten kilometers just to bring her a box of butterfly pastries, like an idiot. His heart sinks. He crushes the cigarette butt and mutters, "You can beat him with ten sticks and not get a peep out of him. But once he does speak, every word is crap."
