Sweetheart, Silly Little Wife

***Blurb:

The Yu family in Lotus Village had a dim-witted daughter.

She was eighteen, but couldn't speak or do any work.

She was vacant and dazed, spending all day beneath the jujube tree at the village entrance.

The village children loved to tease her, throwing stones and red dates at her.

She neither cried nor made a fuss. She secretly tucked the dates that hit her into her palm.

There was a woman in the village who made her living fishing. She had a strange temper and was difficult to get along with.

But whenever she passed the village entrance, she would give the silly girl a candied hawthorn stick.

That day, the silly girl came to the woman with her face bruised and swollen, clutching a bundle of ragged cloth.

Inside were wilted dates and a candied hawthorn stick crushed beyond recognition.

She came before the woman and said, "Mar... marry you. N-no... not marry... old man."

It was the longest sentence she had ever managed to stammer out.

Before long, the bad-tempered woman married the silly girl and brought her home.

From then on, the silly girl had more and more people to cherish her.
