Cyber Chang'an

Before Li Qiniang came to Chang'an, she often heard her father say that Chang'an was always sunny, its sky full of immortal clouds and rosy dawn. All 108 wards floated among the clouds and rosy skies. Huaiyuan Ward was crowded with airships belonging to the Turks and Sogdians, packed so tightly that no one could get through. Trains called Precious Steeds often departed from Tonghua Ward, heading north. Each time they passed through the linked archways of Wangxian Gate, they disappeared behind a blaze of light, because no one was allowed to look upon the sage's residence.

But what she saw with her own eyes now was no sunny sky, only acid rain pouring down without end;

no rosy dawn, only neon lights covering the entire city;

no Turks or Sogdians, only giant holographic screens showing barbarian dancing girls.

There were no archways, just a skyscraper called Daming Palace.

She asked a local, Feng Bao, why Chang'an was so different from the stories.

"The Chang'an you mean... did exist, but that was before the Tianbao era." As he spoke, Feng Bao suddenly looked up. Li Qiniang followed his gaze to an airship patrolling overhead.

Soon, several people in black wearing sunglasses with microelectronic screens appeared on the street.

"Who are they?"

"Shh, they're the Jinwu Guards."
