[A Short Story]
Lin Xinan fell for a man when she was seventeen.
The only thing that tenuously linked their fates was the word "south":
He had come from the south.
A summer night, stars scattered across the sky.
The man stood at the village entrance in a white shirt and black trousers, an unlit cigarette between his fingers. He asked her where the nearest store was.
He wanted to buy a lighter.
She shook her head.
The man looked disappointed.
She glanced at the cigarette in his hand and summoned her courage. "We have matches at home. Would you like one?"
She lent him a match.
He gave her two pieces of advice:
"Study hard."
"Go out and see the world."
