Reborn as a fire child, one of the nine suns descended into this benighted world. Childhood joys and deadly tribulations awaited him, all part of a destiny written in the unseen.

He came to Mount Emei, where a white-robed Taoist taught him astronomy, the ways of the earth, and human affairs. He made a host of classmates and friends. They traveled to an underwater empire, saw his mother's soul with their own eyes, watched a bull-and-bear battle, and seemed to stumble into a financial storm. In the land of the wild people, he made his first foray into the world...
