Alone, I sit quietly before the carved lattice window, still smiling as the years flow by like water. I gaze at the bright, clear moon, its light spilling across the ground.
Behind me, everyone busies themselves packing, but they are all well-trained and make not the slightest commotion. Only the rustle of clothing and the soft tread of their steps remain.
A breeze brushes the back of my head, stirring the glass earrings that hang to my neck. They graze my collar with a soft rustle.
The door has opened. Those footsteps no longer sound as clear as they did years ago; a hint of weariness accompanies them as they draw near. The voice, however, is as gentle and warm as ever. “There’s no need to pack too much. Just take what’s important.”
For an instant, I am lost in a daze, but a gentle smile soon appears. I turn lightly, meeting your clear, jade-dark eyes. The corners of my lips remain lifted as moonlight splashes across your face like clear beads. On one side, the moon shines in quiet stillness; on the other, candlelight glows warmly. At last, a subtle smile parts the stillness of the night in the room.
