Zhou Ji, a ghost official in the Hall of Yama who oversees matters of love, encounters Pei Qing, who took his own life before his appointed time. At the Terrace of Looking Homeward, Pei Qing smashes the reincarnation soup meant for Yun Ran and declares that he wants to marry her. Zhou Ji then looks through their marriage records.
If she had never met Pei Qing, Yun Ran might have spent her whole life trying to enter the palace to find her mother and younger brother. Their meeting was fate, and once fate brought them together, it could not be stopped.
One is a courtesan, quiet and unassuming, who meets people with a smile in the pleasure house and has a calm nature. The other is a battle-hardened general who has never known love. Though they should have had nothing to do with each other, they use one another, each with their own agenda, and slowly uncover truths buried for years. But as they pursue their aims, their intentions gradually become pure.
Perhaps nothing in this world is more precious than this: newlyweds treating each other with respect, bound together by a love knot; meeting at dusk, holding hands, and cherishing one another beyond all price.
Darkness fills the eye, and the ink-black night is shrouded in killing intent. Corpses litter the wilderness, blood flows in streams, and severed limbs and chunks of flesh lie scattered across the ground. Screams, shouts, and the sounds of blades slicing into flesh and striking bone ring without end.
Seeing that Xiaoying was still wiping away tears, Yun Ran had no choice but to pretend she was in pain. "Ow, why does it suddenly hurt so much..."
Xiaoying really fell for it. She stopped wiping her tears and hurried over to look at Yun Ran. "Miss, what's wrong? Is your shoulder hurting again? Hold on a little longer. I'll go get the doctor right away."
Xiaoying turned to leave, but after only a few steps, Yun Ran caught her. "Xiaoying, it's not my shoulder that hurts. It's my heart. My heart aches for you."
Xiaoying: "..."
"If you have this much energy, why not put it to better use on General Pei? Then you wouldn't have to take a blade for him to win his affection." Xiaoying was once again exasperated with her.
There's warmth, fighting, and comedy.
Theme: Love between men and women is ultimately at the mercy of worldly affairs.
