After returning from his studies abroad, Liu Yunqian has lost faith in love because he was once betrayed. He lets his family arrange what they consider a suitable match for him.
Yet the opera performers Qingmo and Qingyan, whom he meets by chance, still stir a few ripples in his calm heart. After several chance encounters, and repeatedly stepping in to rescue Qingyan, the man who once looked down on spoiled young masters gradually falls for him. Liu Yunqian, too, is captivated by Qingyan's remarkable bearing and integrity. But their happiness doesn't last. The marriage arranged by Liu Yunqian's family can no longer be put off, and on his wedding night, Liu Yunqian gets drunk at Qingyan's side.
The two ask nothing of the future, simply savoring their love for each other. In the end, Liu Yunqian's wife discovers why she has been neglected. She hatches a vicious plot, and while Liu Yunqian is away, she has Qingyan attacked. Qingyan falls into the hands of Zheng Zhongguang, who has long coveted him, and is tortured until he would rather be dead. Unable to find his beloved after searching again and again, Liu Yunqian turns to a debauched life to hide his pain.
Qingmo's appearance gives Liu Yunqian hope of finding his beloved again. After learning the truth, Liu Yunqian finally rushes to his lover's side, smiling as he writes and departs.
