If you fall in love with the wrong person in the wrong era, is that love fundamentally and utterly a mistake?
In the late 1960s, a storm swept across all of China. Ruan Huaqiu, an overseas-educated painter, met Jiang Huanian, a young master from Jiangnan fleeing north, on a winter night just as the turmoil began. A bowl of hot dough-drop soup, a steady job, and a safe place to live drew the sheltered young master into the painter's life for good.
But the everyday troubles of Tianjin just kept coming, and it was terribly hard for two boys of uncertain backgrounds to live in peace amid them...
The story is set in old Tianjin. For specifics, see the text. There is some angst. Ruan Huaqiu narrates in first person, so please keep that in mind if it's not for you.
As the subject matter is somewhat sensitive, please treat the characters with respect.
P.S. I have no right to pass judgment on history. I am only telling a story.
