Is His Majesty Jealous Today?

After Xi Chi is thrown from his horse and injured, his family tells him to rest somewhere outside the city for a while. During his recovery, he often runs into a handsome man as radiant as the moon. The man is refined and eloquent, and being around him feels like a spring breeze. Since he often wears plain cloth robes and lives in a thatched hut, Xi Chi assumes he must be a poor scholar. The two grow close, calling each other brothers, drinking and admiring the moon together. Later, Xi Chi has to return home and, unable to say goodbye in person, leaves a note before he goes. The note reads, “Sigh, my father’s making me go home and marry a wife.” Two years later, Xi Chi accompanies his older brother to a palace banquet. He can’t shake the feeling that the person on the throne keeps staring at him. The emperor is handsome but sinister, with sharp eyes as cold as a hawk’s. His occasional cold laugh sends a chill through the room. For a moment, Xi Chi thinks he looks familiar, but they’re too far apart, and the emperor’s crown curtains hide most of his face. Xi Chi can’t remember when they might have met. After the banquet, someone blocks Xi Chi’s path. The man smiles without warmth. “My dear brother, where’s the wife you married? Why didn’t you bring her so I could meet her?” Xi Chi finally recognizes him. “Brother Li, what happened to you?” Where had his warm, spring-breeze-like friend gone?!
