01
Wen Shuyao, who had always been well-behaved, rebelled for once and registered her marriage to a man she had met only a few times.
Gu Congyan stood at the top of Nangang's circle of powerful elites. He was decisive and ruthless in business, noble and restrained in his desires, and never showed his feelings. Extremely cold and self-controlled, the media called him immune to scandals. His private life was as discreet as it was mysterious.
He was exactly Wen Shuyao's ideal husband: handsome, capable, and impossible to fall in love with her.
Seeing a ring tossed carelessly on the table, a friend teased, “Well, Young Master Gu really got married. To whom?”
Dim lamplight spilled a soft, warm glow, tracing the cool, sharp lines of Gu Congyan's profile. He lounged casually on the sofa with his eyes half-closed and asked nonchalantly, “We're all going to get married sooner or later. Does it matter who it's to?”
The friend, who knew the whole story, mocked him for having no heart. It was true: Gu Congyan had seen countless women trying to seduce him, yet not one had ever made this untouchable man break his vows. This time would probably be no different.
02
The two had married in a whirlwind, each getting what they needed. Everyone in the know was waiting to see their marriage end.
Wen Shuyao kept that firmly in mind.
One day, Gu Congyan saw her carefully storing their marriage certificate in a little box made of black ebony and golden nanmu. His thoughts stirred. His dark eyes were calm, and his tone sounded casual as he asked, “Is it important to you?”
Wen Shuyao answered without hesitation, “Of course. We'll need it when we get divorced.”
A brief silence followed.
Gu Congyan's gaze turned colder. “You're certainly eager to get divorced.”
Wen Shuyao thought he was being strange. “What, you want to grow old with me?”
Outside, snow was falling.
The sky had turned a dusky blue-black, and snow drifted down like tattered silk, settling on the branches of the cold pines.
Gu Congyan didn't want to admit it, but for one brief moment, his heart had stirred.
03
Employees at the group quietly whispered that their cold workaholic CEO Gu had been acting strangely lately: he was actually leaving work on time every day.
The editor-in-chief of First Finance called in person to request an interview at six thirty that evening.
Gu Congyan declined. “Sorry, I have to leave work on time at six to pick up my wife from school.”
At first light the next morning, Gu Congyan got up early to travel to a nearby city on business. Wen Shuyao was a light sleeper and had woken up too. Wrapped in a small blanket, she scrolled through her phone.
She was a little grouchy in the morning, with an aching waist and a sore back. She had barely slept, yet the man beside her was still bright-eyed and energetic, looking even more radiant. His white shirt outlined his lean waist, and his sharp, clean-cut features were striking. His eyes lowered as he fastened his watch with one hand.
Wen Shuyao clicked her tongue and pointed at a news story. “This article even says you're cold and abstin...”
Her face flushed. She mumbled the rest, then declared with heartfelt indignation, “That's complete nonsense!”
Gu Congyan raised an eyebrow. Wen Shuyao saw him calmly undo his watch and loosen his collar again. On guard, she dropped her phone and clutched the blanket tighter. “Hey, what are you doing?”
Warm breath swept over her, and the thin blanket fell away. Gu Congyan's deep voice rang out. “Let me show my wife just how passionate I am.”
After sunset, morning will surely come.
Let me be your eternal dawn, waking you from every long, dormant night.
