A resilient, optimistic, pitiful bottom * A cold, devoted mountain-god top
Chu Yao is a poor soul, unloved by both his father and mother.
The villagers say he's ugly and thin, but at least he's obedient and capable.
During the spring drought, his adoptive mother sells him to the village for a load of grain and offers him up as a sacrifice to the evil mountain god.
In the desolate mountains, the cave entrance is piled high with bones.
The villagers pity the poor boy, wondering whether he'll be swallowed alive by a beast or eaten by an evil god.
Chu Yao trembles as he stares at the bones. "Th-these would be great for burying in the fields as fertilizer."
That is, if he can stay alive QAQ.
But no one could have guessed:
The ferocious tiger rolls over and begs him to pet its head.
The savage wolf king bows reverently and wags its tail at him.
Even the bones at the cave entrance have come to life, wearing aprons and turning into "snail girls."
War breaks out, and the villagers flee into the mountains to escape the disaster.
Beneath a peach grove, in a cabin, a beautiful man sits on a mat petting a cat, with wild beasts dozing all around him.
The villagers, covered in dust, are both frightened and overjoyed. "Mountain God, please protect us!"
The beauty turns around. "I'm Chu Yao. He's the mountain god."
Chu Yao is still alive? The villagers are thunderstruck. A handsome, cold-faced man emerges from the cabin.
The man wears an apron around his waist and holds a spatula. "Xiao Yao, what would you like for dinner today?"
From the top's perspective:
Shen Wuyan's true form is an ancient glacier, and he's been a perennial bachelor in the Matchmaker's ledger for ten thousand years.
He descends to the mortal realm to undergo a trial of love. The Matchmaker arranges all the popular types for him: sweet and silly beauties, aloof flirts, irresistible charmers, spoiled drama queens...
They all end up as bones beneath the indifferent mountain god.
What a flower-destroying block of ice! The Matchmaker is so angry he wants to sentence that big ice cube to a lifetime without a wife.
Until, through a twist of fate, the villagers offer a sickly, scrawny boy as a sacrifice to the mountain god.
The mountain god finally gets the hang of love, washing clothes and cooking for the poor boy.
The tall, stern mountain god sometimes even looks self-loathing. "Xiao Yao, my body runs cold. You won't despise me for having cold hands and feet, will you?"
Chu Yao feels sorry for his friend, who can do everything but runs cold and can't be left alone. "I'll warm you up. You'll be warm if you hold me while we sleep."
Shen Wuyan smiles tenderly. "Xiao Yao is so good to me."
#He thought this was a place where he would be buried, but instead he grew flesh and blood anew.#

"The Daily Life of a Farm Child Growing Up"
Zhang Xiaoshui is born in a thatched hut in a refugee village.
His parents are dim-witted and frail. At six years old, Zhang Xiaoshui is withdrawn and sensible, and takes on household chores early.
Life is so hard they never know where their next meal is coming from, yet his father brings home another child.
The child has a grim look on his face the whole way there.
Zhang's father points to Zhang Xiaoshui, a pretty boy his own age, standing inside the doorway. "From now on, you're responsible for taking good care of your little brother."
The cruel little wolf's eyes light up.
He gives up on running away and grabs the honest Zhang father's hand. "Dad, change my name to Zhang Youdi!"
At that, Zhang Xiaoshui bursts into tears.
He drags a stick longer than himself over to beat up the strange child who's stolen his father.
When the village children bully Zhang Xiaoshui, Zhang Youdi is the first to rush in and protect him.
When a neighboring village withholds wages from the Zhang family, Zhang Youdi takes Zhang Xiaoshui along to demand the money every day.
Gradually, everyone learns that Old Zhang is easy to push around, but his adopted son is a fierce one.
The villagers are jealous and embarrassed. They used to laugh at Old Zhang for being too meek, but now his little quail has hatched into a fierce eagle.
When Zhang Xiaoshui reaches the age for marriage, Zhang Youdi drives off everyone who comes courting.
He declares that anyone who wants to marry his little brother must meet two conditions:
Earn more money than him.
Be better at fighting than him.
Zhang Xiaoshui is so angry he could cry. "You've scared them all away! How am I supposed to get married now?"
Zhang Youdi wipes away his tears. "Why don't you spend your life with your big brother? I'll always treat you well."
Every matchmaking meeting ends in failure. Zhang's father, who knows nothing of what's going on, watches his son remain unmarried with a long-stemmed pipe in his mouth and frets.
"You've been spoiled by your brother since you were little. What family in the village could put up with your pampered young-master temper?"
Zhang Xiaoshui turns red for no reason. At night, his brother insists on nibbling his feet and can't be kicked away.
He calls him a good boy, and calls him... his little darling.
Even when Zhang Xiaoshui hits him, he just smiles.
What can Zhang Xiaoshui do? His brother has protected him since childhood, so all he can do is spoil him in return.
