Beneath the lush camphor trees, cicadas shrilled noisily, and summer seemed to have no end.
In a quiet corner, Shen Ju frantically fanned herself with a sheet of paper. A bead of sweat rolled down her flushed cheek as she waited for the results of her 400-meter race to be posted.
Suddenly, something cold pressed against her face for an instant. A bottle of ice water appeared before her, and a tall, slim figure blocked the glaring sun.
"Why didn't you come find me?" a low voice asked, sounding displeased.
Shen Ju turned to look at the boy standing in the sunlight, squinting slightly as she said, "Our classes are so far apart. If I went to the stands to see you, wouldn't that be way too obvious?"
Gu Xiu furrowed his brows and stared at Shen Ju. "You think my class doesn't already know about you?"
Feeling guilty, Shen Ju looked away. "Fine, I was too lazy."
Gu Xiu raised his hand. Shen Ju instinctively dodged, but Gu Xiu clicked his tongue and pulled her into his arms, giving her neck a pinch. "Fine, just die of laziness, then!" Shen Ju hunched her shoulders as if ticklish, and Gu Xiu stroked her head like she was a kitten.
Then, with a smile, he said, "You must be exhausted. Juju's different from usual today..."
Wearily, Shen Ju leaned against his chest and looked up, a mischievous smile on her face. "I made a whole bunch of male fans today!"
Gu Xiu pinched her cheek. "You've got a lot of nerve saying that, Shen Ju. You did it on purpose, didn't you?"
But it all began that sweltering summer...
