Shen Chen had a secret she'd kept in her heart for five years.
She liked Lin Lang. From elementary school through high school, he was all she could see.
When they were little, she helped him sneak out of class and covered for him. As they got older, she did his homework. Later, she spent every day bickering with him.
Then one day, Lin Lang got hurt, and Shen Chen, eyes red, tended to his wound. After a long silence, Lin Lang suddenly said, "Shen Chen, we can only be friends."
The medicine fell to the ground, and Shen Chen fled in a panic.
Later, Shen Chen went to college and moved abroad. Lin Lang dreamed of her dressed elegantly, smiling with poise on the brightest stage, surrounded by camera flashes. She had the flowers and the applause, but she didn't have him. He woke in the middle of the night, drenched in cold sweat.
Later still, Shen Chen returned from overseas. When she saw that familiar face on the big screen, her heart no longer stirred, and her secret crush finally faded without ever coming to fruition. One day, Shen Chen was invited to an event and saw the rising violinist Lin Lang. Face to face, she said calmly, "Lin Lang, long time no see." The woman had stopped teasing him. He wasn't used to it.
Lin Lang looked annoyed. "What do you mean, long time no see? Who wants to see you?" Shen Chen smiled awkwardly and walked away, her face pale. Lin Lang was filled with regret, wishing for the umpteenth time that he could slap his own mouth shut.
Who could blame him? This poor girl had waited three years for someone who couldn't say what he meant.
Lin Lang: I couldn't bring myself to ask you to wait for me. I'll work hard. I want a love where we're equals.
Shen Chen: Sure.
