Thirty-three-year-old Xu Wenyuan dragged himself home, exhausted. Before turning his key in the lock, he saw a young man collapsed beside a roadside tree downstairs.
The young man had dyed his hair red.
Xu Wenyuan had never seen anyone with red hair before.
On a whim, Xu Wenyuan took him home and laid him on the sofa. The next morning, the young man was gone. All the food in the fridge had been eaten, down to the crumbs in the cookie jar.
There was a note and a fifty-yuan bill on the coffee table.
The note read: Thank you.
A week later, Xu Wenyuan saw the red-haired young man again at his front door.
The young man was crouched in front of it, clutching a guitar. His hair and clothes were soaked, and he looked like a big dog caught in the rain.
Xu Wenyuan recognized him at once. "Oh, you're the one from last week..."
The young man nodded. Xu Wenyuan asked, "What do you want?"
Zhong Yuhao: "I'm hungry."
Xu Wenyuan: "Huh?"
Zhong Yuhao muttered it again. "I'm hungry."
Xu Wenyuan laughed in disbelief. "You still haven't paid for last week's meals. You owe me another fifty-nine yuan."
"I don't have that much money on me." Zhong Yuhao looked at him and plucked a guitar string. "How about I play you a song to cover the meal? What do you think?"
