The Moon Is Out Tonight

Gu Tu never kept a diary, but in middle school she had a notebook filled with hazy little sentences, arranged by date. Some days she'd write down several. On quieter days, just one. That one was often something like this: -- Are there stars tonight? No. Only the moon. Her name was Gu Tu. Gu Tu was another name for the moon. She was born on a moonlit night, so her father gave her that name. The person she liked was named Wei Fengxing. * When Wei Fengxing was at his most self-destructive, a moon happened to shine on him. Gu Tu watched people play basketball, so he went and learned to play. Gu Tu said she hated math, so he got a perfect score in it. Gu Tu said she liked boys in white shirts, so he added several shirts to his wardrobe. He wanted to become the person she hoped for, so that when he finally came up to her, he could be a little more at ease and say, "What a coincidence, Gu Tu." But he never managed it. Middle school, high school, university. And later, all the way up to their wedding. Standing in front of her, he was still so nervous his heart raced, his palms sweated, and his eyes turned red. "Thank you, Tu Tu." He never met the stars, but he met the moon. -- Thank you for letting the moon light up my night sky. * Much later, Gu Tu was tidying her bookcase when she came across that old notebook. To her surprise, two more lines had been added in a sharp, angular hand. -- Is there a moon tonight? Yes. The stars are holding her. * 1.
