Liaoran was destined to become a Buddha. So anyone who developed feelings for him was doomed to a tragic ending.
Liaoran willingly entered the Buddhist order despite being a prince of the former dynasty, and his life was full of twists and turns. His circle of friends was wide, ranging from princes, royal descendants, and court officials to commoners, poor folk, courtesans, and actors. Everyone spoke of Liaoran with reverence and devotion.
The Crown Prince loved Liaoran with fierce devotion. Many people fell in love with Liaoran, but the Crown Prince was different because he knew there could be no happy ending and still stubbornly held on. “My love for you is my business. You can’t stop me.”
At the end of Liaoran’s life, the person he remembered most vividly was the Crown Prince. Perhaps that was enough for him.
