The Manhunt Handbook

A forensic medical examiner is a specialist who uses medical techniques within the judicial system to examine people, corpses, objects, or substances connected to a case and make expert findings. In ancient China, officials responsible for examining criminal injuries and corpses were called coroner's assistants. In China, forensic examiners are generally full-time specialists employed by public security or judicial authorities. They may also be forensic medicine teachers at universities, or physicians with forensic expertise, commissioned or hired by judicial authorities. They must have no personal stake in the case. After conducting an examination and assessment, the examiner must issue a forensic report. If the report is to be used as evidence, the defendant must be notified. At the defendant's request, a supplementary or repeat examination may be conducted. This ancient profession has never been welcomed, whether in ancient times or in modern Chinese society. No matter how highly educated and well-paid today's forensic examiners may be, the profession remains entangled with ethics and morality in a society where feudal superstition still holds sway, and forensic work has long faced considerable criticism.
