Li Shu transmigrates into a book and becomes a maid to the legitimate daughter of a capital official. When the young lady is named a Noble Lady, Li Shu follows her into the palace and becomes a brand-new palace maid.
The young lady is the heroine of the novel. In the palace, where danger lurks at every turn, she has one lucky break after another and eventually becomes empress, and even empress dowager.
Li Shu, meanwhile, is merely a cannon-fodder character who has just entered the palace alongside the young lady. She is not even a minor supporting character.
With no friends or family in the palace, she has to focus on finding a way to stay alive.
Worse still, the crown prince's gaze is growing increasingly strange. He is the novel's ultimate villain, and the heroine will fight him with all her wits to secure the throne for her son.
Li Shu wants no part in the power struggle between these two formidable figures.
Mi Hongchen has a secret, or rather, blatantly obvious, idea: to bring the startled little palace maid into the Eastern Palace and make her his cherished concubine.
But every time he hints at it, the maid not only refuses to take the bait, she repeatedly pretends not to understand.
Finally, one day, he corners her in a secluded part of the imperial garden. His gaze burns as he lifts her chin, forcing her to meet his unyielding eyes. In a husky voice, he says, "I have feelings for you. Will you be with me?"
Under his intense stare, she is close to tears. She manages a reluctant, "All right."
He takes his hand from her chin, and a smile appears on his impassive face. "A Shu, that's more like it. From now on, stay by my side and be good."
Later on,
everyone knows the crown prince has a cherished favorite by his side...
