Tao Tao's name sounds lovely, but she's an ugly girl.
Her skin is dark and rough, and she's short, looking like a little monkey.
The village children throw stones at her, then howl with laughter at her as she stands there covered in dust. "Ugly girl, nobody loves you. Take a fall, and you'll look like a ghost."
The damn System says, "Sorry, a glitch scrambled my programming. As compensation, I'll give you the identity of a wealthy family's long-lost daughter and a handsome husband."
Tao Tao crawls up from the dirt. Her face is smeared with blood where the stones struck her. She grabs the hoe she was using to dig and breaks the children's legs one by one.
She won't let a single person who bullied her get away with it.
But the little monster behind her, who always stays quiet and refuses to leave her side, is giving her a hard time.
Tao Tao wipes the dirt from her face. The stone injured her right eye, and she can barely open it, making her look like a pirate.
She glares at him and says, "What are you looking at?"
The little monster doesn't mind how filthy she is. He silently crouches in front of her and touches her badly swollen eye with his cold fingers. His seldom-used voice is halting and low. "Tao Tao, it doesn't hurt."
