Song Qiao has rosy cheeks, glossy black hair, and porcelain skin. She's a sweet girl who gets along with everyone.
One day, she wakes up to the truth: she's a doomed side character in a period novel. Born to a family living in a military compound, she signed up to go to the countryside and is enthusiastically helping develop the Great Northern Wilderness. But before long, she'll die there of hemorrhagic fever.
Song Qiao quickly sets two small goals for herself. First, absolutely do not go reclaim wilderness. Second, get back to the city.
Just as she's making steady progress toward her second goal after accomplishing the first, Zhao Duo, her former childhood betrothal partner, suddenly appears.
"My grandma's not going to make it. The old lady's nagging me to get married soon. How about we settle for each other?" Zhao Duo suggests.
They never thought much of each other. Song Qiao found him big, rough, and unruly, while he thought she was spoiled.
Seeing her surprised expression, he quickly adds, afraid she'll turn him down, "It can just be a fake marriage."
Song Qiao wants to leave the Great Northern Wilderness, but doesn't want to go home. She figures she's going to get married someday anyway, so a fake marriage with someone she knows sounds fine.
After dreaming that Song Qiao falls ill and dies, Zhao Duo wakes with red-rimmed eyes. He sets two small goals for himself: first, get promoted to deputy battalion commander as soon as possible; second, get Song Qiao out of the Great Northern Wilderness right away.
His comrades notice that Zhao Duo has changed. The former slacker suddenly takes on a dangerous mine-clearing mission, earns a promotion to deputy battalion commander, and seems to have become focused on his career. Little do they know that after his promotion, he takes leave and brings back an incredibly beautiful young woman, with skin like jade, delicate features, and expressive, limpid eyes.
Oh, so he wants to qualify for family accompaniment.
For this woman, he's even willing to risk his life.
This man, who claims to have no interest in women, is always holding his wife's fair, tender hands, rubbing them and blowing on them as he says with concern, "How about we stop learning?"
His comrades all start feeling the pressure. Every man guarding the border is a stalwart, hot-blooded soldier, but Zhao Duo takes competition to another level. He insists on coming first every time, volunteers for the toughest missions, and over the next decade or so works his way up to becoming a senior officer, turning his division into an elite unit.
Zhao Duo: Would you believe me if I said I do it so my wife can live in a bigger house and I can get more allowances to buy her face cream?
His wife is extraordinary, too. Other men's wives work on farms, as doctors or teachers, or in performance troupes. His wife is the finest jade carver in Huaguo.
