He put a heavy emphasis on the words "beloved wife."

Lin Youxia blinked. "Wasn't it 'Hello there, Li Yinhe'?"

"Mm." Chu Lanxi nodded, leaning closer to her. "So, hello there, Lin Youxia."

"Wang Xiaobo began every letter to his beloved wife, Li Yinhe, with 'Hello there, Li Yinhe.' So, hello there, Lin Youxia."

"If saying I want to sleep with you is too direct, I'll put it more poetically."

"I want to wake up beside you every day."

"What am I to you?"

At his question, Bai Zhixi thought for a moment, searching her limited vocabulary for the right adjective. "Um... like an omnipotent god."

"An omnipotent god?" The man repeated the words as they waited at a red light, then gave a faint smile. His usually placid eyes, rarely stirred, softened with tender affection. "I'm no god. Gods love all humanity. I only love you."

A year ago, Bai Zhixi was separated from the friend traveling with her on the streets of New York. There, she happened upon Si Yuheng, who was undercover in a criminal organization.

Criminals often appeared in that area. The man walked toward her slowly through the rain, an aura of menace about him. But as he came closer, he reined in his sharp edge and extended a steady hand, offering to lead her away.

Seeing the unease on her face, he took off his expensive coat and draped it over her shoulders, then asked in perfect Mandarin, "Are you Chinese?"

The joy of meeting a fellow countryman abroad gradually calmed Bai Zhixi. Then she heard him say, "Don't be afraid. I won't let anything happen to you."

After she returned to China, Bai Zhixi soon forgot the encounter. She never imagined that she had long been the most important piece in the man's meticulous plan.

When they met again, Bai Zhixi mistakenly thought Si Yuheng was merely a department manager at a business karaoke club.

Later, she learned he was a "criminal" and came to hate him with all her heart.

Later still, she received his uniform, covered in medals, and finally understood that the calm, peaceful life she seemed to lead was made possible by someone who had risked his life to carve out a safe haven for her.

"I'll bear all the darkness in the world for you. You just enjoy every beautiful day and every lovely night."
