From the start, they had a drafty shack with all its plaster falling off. They could never go home until they reached Lv. 100.

Sakata Gintoki clutched half a bottle of strawberry milk and bristled on the spot. "Huh? Redemption? I can't even pay my rent, and you want me to redeem other people? Build a village? The three of us can't even support ourselves, you damn idiot!"

Just as Gintoki was so worried about building a village that his naturally curly hair nearly straightened, a tremendous crash rang out, and half of Kabukicho dropped straight into the ninja world.

Katsura Kotaro, waving an anti-foreign flag, opened with, "It's not a wig, it's Katsura!" Then he and Elizabeth became the ninja world's number-one infrastructure fanatics, building canals, schools, and highways. They cared more about it than Gintoki, the so-called Silver Shadow, and even recruited every stray cat in the ninja world along the way.

The Shinsengumi, who had come after the Joi rebels, promptly became the Silver Country's security force. Okita Sougo and Kagura teamed up to raid every rogue ninja hideout in the world, and blew up Orochimaru's evil lab three times for good measure.

Granny Otose took over the village's entire rental income with Catherine and became the ninja world's number-one landlady...

They didn't seek ninja-world domination or launch a war of unification. They simply built a place called "Silver Country: Kabukicho Village" in the barren mountains along the border of the Land of Fire.

Here, no one was burdened by a predestined fate. There was no discrimination based on bloodline limits, no divide between rogue ninjas and civilians, and no ninjas left to rot in the dark.

Whether you were one of the Five Kage or a rogue ninja, a hero or an ordinary person, someone who wanted to do research or sell dumplings, someone who just wanted to drink strawberry milk or munch on vinegar kelp, there would always be a hot meal, a place to stay, and a group of companions who would never abandon you.

The ninja world, once filled with tragedy, was transformed completely by this noisy bunch into a world where everyone could laugh out loud.

Someone once asked Gintoki what it felt like to be the first leader of the ninja world's number-one village.

With a strawberry lollipop between his teeth and his legs crossed, Gintoki looked carefree, yet spoke with absolute sincerity:

"Forget this Silver Shadow nonsense. I'm just a guy who runs a Yorozuya."

"This world already has more than enough tragedies. Instead of forcing everyone to become heroes, why not give them a place where they can live on with a smile?"

"After all, a samurai's sword was never meant for killing. It was meant to protect the smiles of the people around you."

Oh, and one more thing: even after the ninja world finally found peace, Gintoki still never managed to pay Granny Otose all the rent he owed.
