Blurb:
In her previous life, Xiang Tao was the concubine of Xia Yuan, the Great General Who Guards the Nation. Xia Yuan had been appointed a general at a young age and won countless battles. He was the dream man of every noblewoman in the capital.
But just after she was brought into his household, Xia Yuan led his troops off to war. She caught only one distant glimpse of him: the young man sat astride his horse, handsome and imposing, impossible to look away from.
She waited for his return with longing, never imagining that six years would pass before he came back.
The day he returned to the capital, she cautiously approached him. Before she could say a word, he told her, "Your only concern is serving your mother-in-law. Don't entertain any other notions." His words chilled her to the bone.
She became the household's laughingstock and no longer dared to see him.
Later, when her father and brother were imprisoned, she went to beg him for help. On a freezing winter day, she knelt outside his tent until her knees bled, but he remained unmoved. She swallowed her pride and pleaded anyway, only for his adjutant to crack her head open and leave her an idiot.
With no family left and her mind gone, she drifted through life for five years. She died while still in the bloom of youth.
Perhaps her resentment was too deep. Even after death, her spirit remained, trapped in an incense pavilion at Baima Temple. The temple was always crowded with worshippers praying to the gods. She spent decades among them, seeing through human nature until her senses grew keen and she became imbued with the scent of incense.
Then she was reborn, back to the time before Xia Yuan returned to the capital to report on his duties.
*
Xia Yuan had spent years stationed at the border. A decorated general who expected to die on the battlefield, he was also cold and unfeeling. The women foisted on him by people with their own agendas were all sent to his residence in the capital. He accepted them without question, but never laid a finger on them.
He often dreamed that he gave up his family fortune for an idiot woman and stayed by her side for five years. Countless people pitied him, but he was content to do it.
He desperately wanted to know who the woman in his dreams was, until...
He met a concubine named Xiang Tao in the back courtyard.
Reading Guide:

******** Coming Soon: "After Leaving the Cold-Hearted Prince (Reborn)" ********
The Prince of Yu's household owed Lan Hua a life debt and raised her like one of their own daughters.
She lived in comfort, surrounded by fine clothes and food, and grew into a delicate beauty. The Dowager Princess planned to find her a good match, a way to repay the kindness shown to her years ago.
But Lan Hua developed feelings she shouldn't have.
The young prince of the household, Jiang Zhan, was the youngest Imperial Tutor. Powerful and strikingly handsome, he was pursued by every woman in the capital. They all wanted to marry him.
Lan Hua wanted him even more than they did.
Autumn winds swept across the ground, and the night was cool as water. Dressed in a thin silk nightgown, she knocked on the young prince's bedroom door.
He looked down at her, proud as a cold moon above distant mountains. "Get dressed."
She slipped into his arms like a fish, her voice trembling sweetly. "My lord, warm me up."
By day, she was practically a mistress of the household. By night, she was his lover.
She thought that sooner or later he would give her a title, and she would stay in the household forever.
But...
When a neighboring kingdom invaded, he sent her away to marry for political peace.
On the day of the wedding, she was beautiful in her red dress, her skin like snow, almost too lovely to be real. He stood tall and straight, not sparing her a glance.
Gathering up her wedding dress, she embraced him one last time and whispered in his ear, "Jiang Zhan, if there is another life, I will be the one who breaks your heart."
Blood gushed out and soaked his brocade robe. She collapsed to the ground, a dagger buried in her chest.
Later, Lan Hua was reborn.
In the warm, curtained bed, she watched him sleep and plotted how to leave.
When the refined young prince awoke to find the woman at his side truly gone, he tasted unrequited longing for the first time. His yearning grew wild, consuming him to the bone.
At last, he found her amid the singing and dancing at Spring Breeze House. He seized her slender wrist. "Come back with me."
She gave him a seductive smile and covered her mouth with a laugh. "Sir, I'm very expensive."
One couple, devoted to each other, happy ending.
Theme: Treasure the person by your side.
I actually missed a chapter. I really like this article. The later book, Leaving the Prince, is also good.
What is the use of a man taking medicine after having sex (the face of an old man on the subway)
In Catching Bugs, there is a place where the male protagonist's name is written as Jiang Zhan.
. . . To be honest, I feel a little uncomfortable when I see this. Although I know the ending is HE, these jokes are really unnecessary. They are torture for the sake of torture.
Can't you give them another ten or twenty years? Woohoo!
Why doesn't it show up when I fully booked?
Congratulations! May you finish it off with flowers.
Woo hoo hoo, finish spreading flowers
