Zhang Yawen's boss gave her an assignment: hire a summer intern.
Requirements: A student from one of the top four universities, studying a relevant major, in the top 1% of their class, willing to work overtime, good at spoken English, and ideally able to fix computers.
Compensation: 80 yuan a day, plus a 15-yuan meal allowance.
She nearly flipped the table. "Who on earth would apply for this?"
The job listing went out, and that very day, a candidate who met every requirement showed up. A ghost... No, Ye Qiqi.
Zhang Yawen's roommate, with whom she shared an apartment, moved in with her boyfriend, leaving one room of the two-bedroom apartment vacant.
A typhoon hit that night. Ye Qiqi had put an umbrella in the bottom of her backpack, but she got drenched anyway as she knocked on Zhang Yawen's door.
Her white shirt was soaked through and clung to her body. Water dripped from her black hair, and her eyes were big and bright.
"The subway stopped running. I can't get back to campus." Ye Qiqi's voice was soft and sweet, like a little dog caught in the rain, impossible not to feel sorry for.
That night, Zhang Yawen brought her inside.
Zhang Yawen worked overtime with Ye Qiqi late into the night, then bought her ice cream as a treat.
As the older sister, she started asking about Ye Qiqi's love life. "Are you seeing anyone?"
Ye Qiqi unwrapped the ice cream and shook her head.
"What kind of person do you like?"
Ye Qiqi licked her ice cream and glanced at the person beside her. "Someone who's fit and good-looking."
"Kids these days are so shallow, only caring about looks. What about personality?"
Ye Qiqi thought for a moment. "Fidgety, loud, emotional, always getting herself into a mess. Someone like that."
Zhang Yawen found that personality strangely familiar, though she could not quite say why. She patted Ye Qiqi's slight frame and loudly expressed her disdain.
"Who would like someone with that kind of personality? You must be a pervert."
The ice cream was too sweet for Ye Qiqi, but she gritted her teeth and took another bite anyway, mumbling through it. "Maybe I am."
Ye Qiqi owned a battered old copy of Byron's Poetry Reader, with shoddy binding and rough paper.
But she treasured it like a priceless possession.
Zhang Yawen tried several times to replace it with a hardcover edition, but to no avail.
She asked, "Who gave you this lousy book?"
Ye Qiqi's voice turned cold. "Someone without a heart."
