Shen Shanhuo had a dream. In it, her parents scraped together enough money to pay the "retention fee" so they wouldn't be laid off, only for the boss to run off the very next day.
With no jobs and debts to repay, her father took on backbreaking labor, only to suffer an accident that broke his leg. Her mother became a domestic helper, but after just two days she was sent home with burns. With both parents suddenly unable to work, Shen Shanhuo, the eldest daughter, had no choice but to drop out of high school and shoulder the burden of supporting the family.
As if things weren't bad enough, the local gang leader took a fancy to her because of her striking looks. When she refused, he tried to force himself on her. She was pushed from the building and died before her time.
When Shen Shanhuo woke from the dream with the sensation of falling, she heard her father fretting over whether to borrow money to pay the retention fee and keep his job, or take the severance pay and leave at once.
Thinking of what had happened to her family in the dream, Shen Shanhuo shuddered and rushed out, shouting, "Mom, Dad, you should take the layoff!"
Determined to change her family's fate, she racked her brains for a way forward. Strangely, from that day on, she dreamed of food every night.
In her dreams, an old man with a white beard taught her how to make snacks, with detailed instructions and secret ingredient ratios for every dish.
After waking, Shen Shanhuo tried making one of them from memory. The children next door were practically drooling!
She made up her mind: Shen's Snacks was open for business!
Starting with a tricycle cart, she gradually got a regular stall, then rented a small storefront...
Later, the sign for "Shen's Snacks" could be found all over the world.
