The Hated One Who Faked His Death Has Returned to the Capital

In the sixth year of Jingxi, Bian Meisheng was the powerful Left Chancellor, whose authority reached across the land. Six years later, Bian Meisheng was a traitorous lackey who had sold out his country, reviled by everyone. He deserved to be beheaded, his body discarded in the marketplace and left to rot in the wilderness. His written plea for justice was sent into the palace, but the young emperor, who once needed him to coax him to sleep, did not believe him. He sent the token of their love out of prison, but the young general, who had once promised they would remain devoted to each other, did not save him. As he was paraded through the streets before his execution, the white-robed physician whose life he had once saved watched with cold eyes. Bian Meisheng tried everything he could to find a way to survive, but could not secure even the slimmest chance. Was this life ridiculous, or tragic? With grievances and resentment filling his heart, and love and hatred tangled together, he could only let go, however unwillingly. The year after he died, the lost lands of the northern frontier were recovered. Only when Old General Dai returned to the capital did he reveal the truth. The supposed treason and betrayal of his country had actually been a trap Bian Meisheng had set by putting himself in harm's way and luring the Northern Kingdom deep into enemy territory. Without him, how could Old General Dai have won every battle without a single defeat? In the biting chill of early spring, amid the new green on the plum branches, the frail scholar Fang Shian is poisoned by a rare toxin and travels to the capital to seek treatment.
