The regular blurb:
Shi Ye, the third daughter of the Maya family, is an ordinary little martial arts prodigy.
A happy family (though she has no idea who her father is)
Loving elders (meaning that after her second sister trains her, she can run straight to her eldest sister for special medicine)
A brilliant younger sister (meaning she gets her intelligence trounced by her twin sister every day)
Everything is wonderful.
Until, at the age of six, Shi Ye falls off a cliff during the clan's aptitude test, suffering the first defeat of her life.
And so begins her life of rising and falling, falling and rising, then rising and falling again.
Shi Ye can't figure it out. What's going on? Aren't I a prodigy? Aren't I the protagonist? Why do I keep getting boss-level opponents? Weren't the villains' cannon fodder supposed to come one by one to get beaten? Why are there villains but no cannon fodder? Am I even the protagonist?
The warning blurb:
What you expect the heroine to be like: An unbeatable fighter, too clever to be outsmarted.
What she's actually like: Forced to fight opponents above her level and tricked on a daily basis.
What you expect the hero to be like: Devoted, affectionate, a childhood friend.
What he's actually like: Sharp-tongued, proud, and immature.
You might find:
A supporting male character who seems more like the hero than the actual hero
Villains more formidable than the good guys
An ensemble cast, an ensemble cast, an ensemble cast!
A slow burn! An extremely slow burn!
If you want an instant-gratification story, you can close this now. The heroine isn't stupid, but in the early chapters, the world is full of powerful people and she's not much use.
Because of their personalities, some characters treat different people by different standards.
Ensemble cast, with the protagonist occasionally disappearing from the story.
No one is invincible. The protagonist gets beaten up by villains as a child.
No one's perfect. Everyone has some flaws.
The protagonist's worldview doesn't necessarily represent the author's???
A cheerful, carefree cutie x a stoic, grumpy, annoying guy
Note:
From the hero's perspective, this story could also be called How Not to Pick Up Girls, If I Weren't Good-Looking I'd Be Single Forever, The Importance of Childhood Friends, and The Art of Saying Things That Make People Mad.
From the younger sister's perspective, it could also be called Aww, My Big Sister Is So Cute Today, Could You Stop Pairing Her with the Hero, Han Yin Is So Annoying, and I Want to Become a Potions Master.
Theme: Character growth and clashing worldviews
Come on, I just feel like the main character's name is weird, not Western enough?
