Lu Ci transmigrated into a novel he'd read, The Young Master's Tale, as the scummy son-in-law of Xie, the shou protagonist. He was a substitute groom, too.

In the original story, the man Xie was supposed to marry was replaced with a useless freeloader. After marrying into the family, the freeloader caused trouble nonstop, spending the money Xie had worked so hard to earn on drinking and revelry. He also meddled in the protagonist's business and, misled by a business rival, sabotaged Xie's enterprise. In the end, he lost his life, and the Xie family business went bankrupt.

Lu Ci, now in the story, called the original owner a complete idiot. How could he fail to cling to such a powerful backer, and instead keep causing trouble? What was he thinking?

Lu Ci was nothing like him. He was well-behaved and obedient, and knew to come home when it rained. He didn't want a person, just money.

But who could have guessed that the moment Lu Ci laid eyes on Xie, he was so smitten he could barely think straight, calling him “darling” nonstop?

He couldn't help it! His darling was exactly his type!

Still, there were always scheming villains who used underhanded tricks to disrupt his darling's business.

In a fit of anger, Lu Ci took the imperial examination and came back with a juren degree to serve as his darling's backer.

A juren degree wasn't enough to be safe, so the following year Lu Ci earned the top score in the palace examination.

And so, in order to stand up for his darling, Lu Ci rose step by step from a junior Hanlin Academy editor to a first-rank official, reaching the highest levels of government. His darling's business grew and grew, until he became the richest man in the country. Once they both got busy, they often went ten or fifteen days without seeing each other.

Only then did Lu Ci, busy handling government affairs, begin to realize something was wrong.

Wasn't he supposed to lie flat and live off his darling? How had it gotten to the point where he couldn't even see him? He missed his darling so much QAQ
