Yin Ji had never seen her mother.
Then one day, her father brought a woman home. He only told her to treat this stranger as her mother and take good care of her, then left.
Ever since this wrinkled, ugly old woman moved in, the whole house seemed to drop to forty degrees below zero.
Everything the woman touched turned cold and clammy, so Yin Ji demanded, disgusted, that she never leave her room.
She was allowed out only for meals.
On the third day, the woman came out to eat again.
Yin Ji glanced up indifferently, only to find her standing right in front of her, completely naked.
Her pale skin was covered by a thin, glassy membrane. Her appearance had changed dramatically, as if she had suddenly become twenty years younger. In her arms, she held a bulging bundle wrapped in clothes.
The first thing she said had a surprisingly lovely voice, though her words were utterly horrifying:
"A-Ji, I shed my skin. These are the skins I shed. Could you give me some clothes?"
