Spring Falls from the Second Floor

Cui Yang had been half-blind since childhood. Her world was black and white.

When she was seven, she was holding her mother's hand as they walked out of their apartment building when a flowerpot suddenly crashed to the ground. Startled, she looked up just as half of a family portrait floated down from the second floor, twisting in the wind. In the photo was Liang Sui, who was six months older than her. For the first time, colors beyond black and white surged into her vision.

Her barren world came alive, and spring arrived without a sound.

For ten years, they were inseparable. From elementary school through high school, they were either classmates or desk mates, so close that the thin paper separating them was bound to tear.

But life always brings partings.

Years later, at a class reunion, Cui Yang saw Liang Sui and immediately turned to leave. Liang Sui got up and chased after her.

They argued. Cui Yang, who had been holding in her resentment for years, let it all out, while Liang Sui remained silent and took it.

Under the hazy lights of a narrow alley, Liang Sui still appeared in color to Cui Yang, but she no longer seemed as dazzling as before. The fearless abandon of their youth had been worn down by life's unpredictability, leaving her burdened with worries. And once those worries faded, she still seemed content to drift wherever life took her.

She hadn't been doing well all these years. Maybe she still wasn't.

Cui Yang thought it was time for her to become Liang Sui's spring.

Love isn't just a fleeting impulse. It's choosing together to welcome spring.
