In a nutshell:
The story of a lecherous woman who transmigrates to the early Sui dynasty, where she becomes an unregistered male courtesan at an unremarkable brothel by the Qinhuai River, and gets entangled with the spoiled second-generation noble Yang Guang.
Outline:
The first time, she lay beneath his iron hooves on the highway;
The second time, he took his pleasure with her by the Qinhuai River;
The third time, she mocked him at Qingxi Bridge;
The fourth time, she played a trick on him at a banquet;
The fifth time, she had a favor to ask of him in the marketplace;
And then, after an incident that should never have happened, their relationship became a tangled mess that could never be unraveled
Scenes:
Scene One:
Nanfeng (glaring): I hate men with peach-blossom eyes. If you come within three feet of me, I’ll destroy you in the name of the moon! (Raises broom)
Guang (admiring himself in the mirror): Tsk, tsk. Such beautiful eyes, and you don’t love them? How can I bear it! (Covers his face and sobs)
Punched away...
Scene Two:
Nanfeng (eyes gleaming like a wolf): I love long, slender fingers, shaped like scallions, with tips like bamboo shoots. If I see one, I touch it; if I see a pair, I touch them both!
Guang (reaching out his paw, bashfully): Go ahead and touch...
Punched away...
Scene Three:
Guang (gazing at her tenderly): Nanfeng, please let me be your hamster.
Nanfeng (scornfully): So you can bite me?
Guang (solemnly) nods, lunges
Punched away...
Scene Four:
Guang (gazing at her tenderly): Nanfeng, you’re my little wildcat.
Nanfeng (side-eyeing him): Aren’t you a mouse? Why don’t you run away when you see a cat?
Guang (innocently): But I’m a mouse that bites cats.
Punched away...
Scene Five:
Guang: Little wildcat, dance that dance from last time for me again.
Nanfeng (holding out her hand): One hundred taels of silver.
Guang (sighing helplessly), pulls her into his arms.
A few words from the author:
This story is rosy red with a hint of green, both sweet and tart, with a rather unusual flavor;
The heroine has plenty of flaws: she’s lecherous and greedy, sharp-tongued, willful, and domineering. She’s no angel.
Also: Historical details in this story are based on Zizhi Tongjian and Yangdi of the Sui Dynasty by Yuan Gang. Much has been made up, so please just take any discrepancies in stride.
