[Story]

The emperor of the Great Zhao Empire dies suddenly, and a coup erupts in the capital. After the new emperor ascends the throne, everything seems to return to normal, but one strange event after another begins to unfold.

The strange occurrences seem to be connected to Xuxu, a nine-headed serpent who escaped from the Thousand Buddha Caves. She was adopted by the Sixth Master of the Tiansi Estate, who then confined her within a barrier. Even after escaping, she risks her life searching for him. But even after she is sealed away again, the trouble does not end. The truth is far more complicated than it seems.

The demon realm is stirring. It seems a great calamity is about to descend.

Though the Tiansi Estate has ties to the Immortal Realm, its influence and power have waned. Even so, its people have a duty to preserve peace in the mortal world.

At first, the Tenth Master of the Tiansi Estate keeps his distance from Jiang Ling, the newly assigned death soldier, because she resembles the woman he has always loved. Later, impressed by her formidable martial arts and their seamless teamwork, he entrusts her with important responsibilities. They support each other through the chaos of a troubled age.

The Tenth Master is gradually moved by her resilience and determination to keep going in the face of utter despair, mistaking his love for admiration.

As a youth, he swore never to love another. When he finally realizes he has fallen for Jiang Ling, he refuses to break his vow and turns down her confession.

Only when Jiang Ling, the woman who could never be defeated, is injured and collapses in his arms does the Tenth Master realize he has fallen completely. But once a free-spirited person's heart has gone cold, it's hard to turn back.

[Characters]

The Tenth Master: The tenth lord of the Tiansi Estate. Physically frail but immortal, he sustains his magic by sacrificing his own health, hurting himself almost as much as his enemies. He is gentle yet distant, and has someone he loves in his heart.

Jiang Ling (Niannian): A shadow guard from the mysterious Lianjing organization, assigned to get close to the Tenth Master. She is carefree and decisive, looks almost exactly like the woman he loves, but has a completely different personality. A powerful martial artist, she can predict her opponents' moves. Her origins are unknown, and her memories of the past are hazy and scattered.

Tan Yan: In public, a demon hunter who is always seen with the Wu clan chief, though the chief treats him with obsequious deference. An androgynous, mad beauty with vast powers who appears and disappears without a trace.
