Amygdala Hijack

P.S. Sorry, the previous title was the same as several other novels, so I changed it. I checked this time, and there are no duplicates!

Blurb

In 2023, thirty-one-year-old Yun Lan accompanies her current partner to visit family graves in their hometown. She passes the time scrolling through short videos on the way. A video that suddenly appears before her makes her body tremble uncontrollably with alarm.

"According to 2022 statistics, every graduate from the 2005 graduating class of the anti-drug program at Bian Province Police Academy had died in the line of duty within seventeen years."

Suppressing emotions on the verge of breaking her, she calls the number in her contacts that she hasn't called in a long time while stopped at a service area. Only when she hears the steady "beep..." from the receiver does she finally breathe a sigh of relief and quickly end the call. She thinks, the number still connects, so he should be fine. Besides, people in the comments had questioned whether this was fake news from an unreliable source.

On Tomb-Sweeping Day, after Yun Lan and her current partner finish paying their respects and are about to leave the cemetery, a news alert pops up on Weibo. The authorities have refuted the report and condemned the marketing accounts for trying to grab attention.

She finally puts her mind at ease and walks back down the stone steps, holding her partner's hand. She doesn't notice the gravestone of her first love, slightly above and to the side, silently gazing at her face.
