A Love Too Late for Confession

Yun Yan was fascinated by the little fish in the irrigation ditch. She could squat there and watch them for ages. She wanted to catch them, but the little fish swam so fast that they vanished in a flash.

The sun was blazing. Wiping sweat from my brow, I called to her, "Yun Yan, stop watching and let's go. We'll get roasted out here."

"Xiao Ju, I really want to catch a fish."

"You won't catch any. Come on, let's go."

Yun Yan scooped at the water a few times. Only when she finally realized she wasn't going to catch a thing did she reluctantly leave with me.

We left the fields and walked up the hillside, where a few shady trees stood. We sat beneath them.

After a while, Yun Yan climbed a tree again. It was as if she couldn't sit still for a moment. I sat on the ground and looked up at her, wriggling her way up like a worm.

I said, "There are caterpillars up there. Stop climbing and come down."

Yun Yan said, "It's cooler up here."

I saw long, spiky gray caterpillars on the tree, along with a patch of white casings. I was instantly horrified.

"Don't touch that! There are caterpillars!"

Yun Yan had no idea she was about to be in trouble.

A story about the pure, innocent love of youth.
