The newly enthroned empress of the Great Liang is forced to flee the imperial capital. She picks a remote wilderness at random and sets herself up as its ruler, diligently studying agriculture as a roundabout way to save the country.
Today, Ji Yushi cuddles a fluffy creature. Tomorrow, she raises pearl fish. The day after, she fishes a headless ghost out of a well. Nothing she plants ever grows, but her quiet retirement seems to be flowing along just fine, until a shameless bamboo spirit shows up to freeload.
After stuffing himself, the hypercompetitive bamboo spirit pushes and prods her: "As an emperor, how can you lie flat and slack off every day? Why not seek out the Four Directional Gods and reclaim your empire?"
Ji Yushi lies down to feed the fish and barely lifts an eyelid. "Those old fossils? How am I supposed to know where they're buried?"
Who would have thought that one by one, the gods would come looking for her?
Autumn Lord Rushou makes off with the fluffy creature in her arms, claiming it is his childhood sweetheart, betrothed to him by the Heavenly Emperor. Zhurong and the headless ghost bicker whenever they meet, until their squabbling turns into an elopement back to their old home in Fengdu. Her money tree, the pearl fish, transforms into a beautiful merfolk, only to be spirited away by Xuanming, the Sea God, the very next day.
That leaves only the God of Spring...
Legend has it that the God of Spring is either a kindly, portly old man nearing the end of his years, or a little boy in a bellyband riding a green ox. In any case, he's supposed to be gentle as a spring breeze and easy to get along with. That is, until Ji Yushi discovers that the bamboo spirit who saved her dying vegetable seedlings is the God of Spring himself. She immediately drops to her knees.
Xie Huanxue, the God of Spring himself, so gentle and approachable, sneers through clenched teeth. "I am just some old fossil buried who knows where. The Azure Maiden of Taixu has certainly shown me far too much favor."
