Queen of Calamity

With death close at hand and pursuers on his heels, Carlos had no choice but to enter the Demon Forest, known as a death zone. By a stroke of luck, he stumbled into its innermost heart. The birds fell silent, their wings tucked close. Eerie poisonous flowers bloomed in lavish splendor, while luxuriant branches wove a deep, shadowy gloom. He saw the treasure the Demon Forest wished to keep for itself. A red-eyed girl sat upon a throne of withered vines. A pure crown of flowers rested on her head. Her long skirt trailed behind her, her skin was as white as snow, and brambles surrounded her as dark red markings crept up her legs. “Mr. Traveler, could you take me away from here?” she asked Carlos, almost shyly. “I want to see the world outside.” She was so beautiful and innocent, like a child who knew nothing of the world. Carlos was silent for a moment, then nodded. At first, he thought: If he hadn't glimpsed the black horns growing from her silver hair, and seen every terrifying monster prostrate itself before her, begging for her mercy, he would have refused. Later, he thought: Even if she was an unknowable, ultimate calamity, he was still so obsessed with her that it drove him mad. [If she is a god, I want to defile her.] Reading Guide: 1.
