Changshan is a fake monk who spends her days dreaming of getting promoted and striking it rich.
She leaves the mountain, returns to secular life, disguises herself as a man, and passes the imperial examination, racing toward her dreams every step of the way.
The political world is treacherous. She repeatedly falls victim to schemes and wishes she could behead her enemies and leave their bodies for the crows.
But as a newcomer to politics, taking on a stone with an egg is sheer folly.
So...
After carefully choosing her target, she attaches herself to Li Yan, the powerful prime minister who controls the court. All year long, she works for him, chews people out for him, and takes care of the things he can't get involved in himself.
That lets her hide behind a powerful man and count her money in peace.
In time, Changshan becomes a model employee.
But in the eyes of outsiders, she's not even a person. She's Prime Minister Li Xian's dog, a handy blade.
When Li Xian has no use for her, he discards her like trash.
Changshan is gravely wounded on New Year's Eve in the eighth year of Yuan'an.
No one has ever cared for her.
She clings to life, praying for Buddha's protection.
But after all the bad things she's done, even Buddha won't protect her anymore.
As she teeters on the brink of death, she sees Li Yan...
Is he here to take her life?
