I'm Shinichi Kudo. Today, I met an arrogant woman.
...Even more arrogant than me!!
"Well then, congratulations on entering Teitan Middle School..."
"To get to know everyone better, let's start with the first student on the left introducing themselves, shall we?"
Fujii, the homeroom teacher for the first-year class, was approachable and gentle, leaving the students with a good first impression.
"My name is Shinichi Kudo, and I'm a..."
Suddenly, with a squeak, a girl barged into the quiet classroom.
She casually glanced around the room. Her ocean-blue eyes held a languid look as she picked up a piece of chalk and swiftly wrote a name: Kuregi Kiki.
Pointing to her eyes, she said, "I'm half British, half Japanese."
By the time he came to his senses, the girl had already gone and sat down in the corner as if it were nothing. Shinichi Kudo's anger shot up in an instant, and his face darkened.
He continued his introduction:
"My name is Shinichi Kudo. I'm a detective, and I hate people who think too highly of themselves." But the person he was hinting at didn't react at all.
--
What left a deep impression on him was the day Shinichi Kudo tried to get permission to skip class and solve a case, only to be "escorted" out of the homeroom teacher's office. On his way out, he ran into the person he least wanted to see: Kuregi Kiki.
She stopped him.
"Excuse me, Kudo," Kiki said, holding her schoolbag as she called out to Shinichi, who had turned to leave.
"Huh?"
"I'd like to go see the crime scene with you, Kudo."
Hearing her words, Shinichi Kudo's voice turned a little colder.
"Do you even know what you're saying? I..."
Before he could finish, he saw the long, pale pink scar revealed when the girl rolled up her sleeve. It was twisted and horrifying.
A scar like that, enough to make anyone recoil at the sight of it, shouldn't have been on the body of a pampered young lady who'd been waited on hand and foot.
"This string of murders should be over soon, right?"
"I want to see that ugly face for myself."
Shinichi Kudo looked up sharply into her eyes. In the eyes of that usually indifferent girl who never concerned herself with the world, the boy in the prime of his youth saw trust, hatred, and a deep sorrow.
--
"Tan is back today. Ran went to pick him up at the airport, so she asked me to bring you lunch, Kudo."
"Oh..." Kudo opened the lunchbox and found a generous meal inside. The bright colors made it look delicious.
"Did you make this?" Though phrased as a question, he couldn't help sounding certain.
--
That day, Kuregi Kiki was unlike her usual self. As soon as the dismissal bell rang, she grabbed her schoolbag and hurried out of the classroom.
"What a rush... Is a ghost chasing her or something?"
Hearing him, Ran Mouri looked at the figure growing smaller outside the window and said, "I heard from Tan that tomorrow... might be Kiki's birthday."
Shinichi Kudo understood.
But... when he got home and casually solved a case, he saw a girl crouched on a roadside bench, curled into a ball like an abandoned cat.
"Kuregi Kiki?"
--
"Shinichi, it hurts..."
"It's okay. Don't be scared. I'm here."
