Jiang Ruzhuo was a military doctor. She died on the battlefield one day, then woke up to discover she had become a false princess of Great Qi, a man disguised as a woman, and was being sent to Beidi for a political marriage.
The King of Beidi was gravely ill and near death. His younger brother, Tuoba Yuanrong, traveled thousands of miles to meet the bride on his behalf.
He lowered his keen gaze, examining the frail Central Plains princess. Her slender fingers were weaker than those of a woman from the grasslands, and her narrow waist less sturdy. She was no match for his elder brother.
But he could not disobey his brother's command, so he reluctantly put on the wedding robes and performed the wedding rites with Jiang Ruzhuo in his brother's place.
During the nuptial wine ceremony, he curled his lips into a smirk and deliberately revealed the savage Heavenly Wolf tattoo beneath his red robes. He meant to give his little sister-in-law an early taste of the grasslands' customs, so she wouldn't be frightened to death before they even reached the royal court.
Jiang Ruzhuo caught the unmistakable smell of rust and blood on him. With a cool, composed smile, she picked up the nuptial wine and drank it in one gulp, keeping all his malice at bay behind her wide sleeves.
Once in the grasslands, Jiang Ruzhuo had only planned to hide the fact that she was a man, not a woman, and live quietly. But the pastures were covered in dung, the cattle and horses were skin and bones, and the sick cried out in pain. She couldn't help rolling up her sleeves and getting to work on improving things.
She drove out disease, cultivated pasture, planted crops, and built schools... Under her care, the cattle and sheep grew sleek and healthy. No one starved to death in the bitter winters anymore, and the herders came to regard her as the purest goddess of the grasslands, nearly prostrating themselves whenever they saw her.
Jiang Ruzhuo was too busy to pay Tuoba Yuanrong any mind, much less notice his gaze growing increasingly fierce.
One day, Jiang Ruzhuo was bent over a desk, sketching plans for an irrigation canal, when she was dragged into the military tent.
The tent was dim, lit only by the unsteady flicker of a candle.
Jiang Ruzhuo greeted him with cool formality. "Your Majesty, what is the matter?"
"Your Majesty? By the customs of our grasslands, I was always meant to inherit my elder brother's wife." Tuoba Yuanrong bit down fiercely on Jiang Ruzhuo's shoulder. The cold little red bead at the end of his braid pressed against her burning skin. "Besides, I was the one who married you, the one who performed the rites with you, and the one who shared your wedding night. Whether you're a man or a woman, you should call me 'husband.' Don't you agree?"
