Six years ago, Qin Ran ended things with the man she had been betrothed to since birth, then turned around and married into Prince Chu's household.
Prince Chu was frail and fated to die young. Before he died, he gave her a divorce letter, but Qin Ran devoted herself to remaining a widow for him.
Then the new emperor issued an edict ordering her to remarry in the northern frontier, into the newly ennobled Marquis Dingbei's household.
Back then, Wei Lian's family had been destroyed, his engagement had been ruined, and he had been beaten and driven out of the capital. Yet on the day he was made a marquis, he used his military achievements to obtain this very edict.
On their wedding night, Wei Lian never came home. Qin Ran lifted her own veil and mocked herself: as a twice-married woman, she needn't worry about good luck. After all, he hadn't married her to make her happy. The debt she owed would have to be repaid sooner or later.
Half a month later, when they met, he smiled darkly. "Qin Ran, long time no see."
She calmly curtsied. "This humble wife pays her respects to the marquis."
Wei Lian reached out and touched her neck. "Why bother with formalities between us?"
She thought that with his vengeful nature, he would torment her out of spite and eventually give her a letter of repudiation and send her away. So she began preparing for that eventuality.
But when he found out, Wei Lian's eyes turned bloodshot. "Dream on! Unless I die, you'll never leave me again."
Qin Ran froze, then replied, "I wouldn't dare, my lord."
Nor did she want to anymore.
