There are more dead people who once lived than there are people living now.
People are a troublesome species when they're alive, and rarely know how to behave after they die. To save Earth from imminent overload, Jing Chi answers the call and joins the relevant department to help spirits pass on.
While preparing for the exam, he hears that his future boss is a shrewd old man with a kindly face. But when he arrives at the interview and looks up, he sees...
Jing Chi: "Sir, I heard you're... 162 years old this year? You certainly know how to stay youthful."
The handsome boss glances at him. "Who told you that? It's a complete rumor."
Jing Chi relaxes. "Understood, sir. So how old are you? You're certainly young and accomplished."
"I stopped keeping track after a thousand. Anyway, I'm just a little older than you. You can call me Dad."
Jing Chi: "..."
Jing Chi: "You're too modest, Ancestor."
.
Jing Chi follows his newly adopted ancestor, Yin Xun, to their workplace.
Jing Chi stares in disbelief. "Sir, we're a proper government agency. How can our office building be this shabby?"
"The Spirit Transcendence Bureau is over there." Yin Xun points in that direction, then smiles kindly at him. "We're an unofficial, grassroots spirit-transcendence group. I'm the captain. You're the first team member to join, so starting today, you're the vice-captain. Happy?"
Jing Chi: "..."
Jing Chi: "Are we allowed to dig up our ancestors' graves?"
.
Reader's guide:
A captain with a few screws loose who pulls off outrageous stunts with cheat-like powers, and a vice-captain who is more or less normal, just a little absent-minded and fond of snarky commentary. They use temptation on some people and threats on some non-humans, righting wrongs in the ordinary city night. A wholesome story (?).
They go on a rampage and crack jokes in horror-game instances. The tone is lively, but if you have a weak heart, don't read it in the middle of the night.
No CP. The main cast has no romance plotlines. The captain and vice-captain share pure socialist grandpa-and-grandson affection (?), even straighter than Gintoki and Shinpachi. Brothers stick together for life. Whoever gets a partner first is a dog. Having a partner would get in the way of my swordplay, and that's part of my character. If you don't like it, don't read!
