Into the Light

On a sweltering summer night, Yu Wenchि couldn't go home. A homeless man had taken over his usual spot in the park, so, with nothing better to do, he wandered to a small bridge nearby. He stood in the middle of the bridge, leaning over to watch fish swish their tails as they swam through the river, when someone suddenly yanked him backward. The person who grabbed him was furious. "Is there really nothing you can't get through? Why would you try to kill yourself?!" Yu Wenchि looked up at the voice and saw a face he didn't quite recognize. The boy holding him had sharp, handsome features. He wore such a fierce expression that it seemed he wanted to pick a fight with Yu Wenchि right then and there. Yu Wenchि watched him silently, thinking that the face wasn't entirely unfamiliar. He had forgotten which day, years ago, a fierce-looking boy had chased away the thugs trying to extort him. The boy hadn't said a word to him, just wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth and walked off without a word. But from that day on, someone began following Yu Wenchि from a few meters behind, every day on his way to and from school. He never spoke to Yu Wenchि. He would only appear without a word when someone tried to bully him, take care of them in a few quick moves, then go back to following Yu Wenchि from a distance as usual. This was the first time he had ever walked up to Yu Wenchि and spoken to him. So after gazing at him quietly for a moment, Yu Wenchि didn't explain that he hadn't been trying to kill himself. Instead, he said, "I have nowhere to go." The boy froze, but his tone remained fierce. "Even if you have nowhere to go, you can't kill yourself!" "Then what should I do?" Yu Wenchि looked at him and suddenly asked, "Will you take me in?" Xiao Jianyu fell silent for only a few seconds before bringing Yu Wenchि home without hesitation. From that day on, Xiao Jianyu provided for Yu Wenchि, and Yu Wenchि stayed by Xiao Jianyu's side. The two unlucky boys leaned on each other and carved out a place in the world for themselves.
