When Zhao Hu was thirteen, on a pleasure boat on the Qinhuai River, the gentle and refined Crown Prince knelt before the Emperor and asked for her hand in marriage as his principal consort.

He stroked her hand and lowered his eyes. "You should have become Empress."

Thinking he was jealous, Zhao Hu quickly looped her arms around his neck and pressed her soft, flushed cheek to his stiffened face.

"You're so wonderful that I wouldn't trade you for the position of Empress."

But Zhao Hu never imagined that the Prince of Yan would later lead his troops south, take the throne from his nephew, and place her on the throne as Empress once more.

Rumor had it that on the day the Prince of Yan entered Jinling, the palace burned down, reducing its servants and treasures to ashes, while the young Emperor vanished without a trace. Only one painting from the Emperor's bedchamber remained unharmed, and it was presented to the Prince of Yan.
