Though Yu Suyin and Liu Jingyao were emperor and empress, they couldn't stand each other.
Liu Jingyao ascended the throne at a young age. The Yu clan was the biggest obstacle to his taking power himself, but to keep the powerful maternal relatives in check, he had no choice but to pretend he was deeply in love with his empress.
Yu Suyin had always loved freedom. Her family had forced her into the palace to become empress, and she was already unhappy about it. To make matters worse, the man who was technically her husband seemed even more unhappy than she was. He could speak pleasantly to anyone, but whenever he saw her, he always wore a smile that never reached his eyes.
Yu Suyin: Ha. Throwing a tantrum because you're powerless.
.
She had thought she'd be tied to Liu Jingyao for the rest of her life, so Yu Suyin only cared about eating well and waiting for death.
Then she woke up one day and discovered she'd transmigrated!
This was a truly free era. She could do whatever she wanted, no longer controlled by her family. Most importantly, she wouldn't have to deal with Liu Jingyao, that pain in the neck!
Yu Suyin: Bliss!
Three years after transmigrating, Yu Suyin had long since adapted to this world. The belief that everyone was equal had taken root in her heart, and every night before falling asleep, she would chant, "Socialism is great. May the corrupt feudal dynasty perish forever and never be reborn!"
Then one day, while she was at work, she got a call from the police station. Her husband had gotten lost, and they wanted her to come pick him up.
Yu Suyin: Husband? What husband?
The only man she'd ever married was Liu Jingyao, that pain in the neck.
With that in mind, she took time off and went to the local police station. But when she saw the man sitting on a bench, dressed in a brocade robe, Yu Suyin was completely stunned.
"Liu Jingyao, why are you here?!"
.
Liu Jingyao had nowhere else to go, so Yu Suyin had no choice but to take him home.
One person's salary supporting two made an already tight household budget even worse.
Especially since he hadn't realized he was no longer emperor, and kept putting on imperial airs in front of her.
After catching Liu Jingyao failing to wash the dishes yet again, Yu Suyin finally snapped.
"Liu Jingyao, if you don't wash the dishes next time, I'm kicking you out!"
Liu Jingyao wasn't going to take that lying down. He sat on the sofa, arched a brow, and turned a frosty face toward her.
"You dare speak to your emperor like that? That's high treason!"
Yu Suyin: "Yeah, right. The Great Heng Dynasty fell centuries ago, and you still think you're emperor."
Liu Jingyao: (furious) Insolence!
.
She thought she'd spend the rest of her life happily bossing around her former emperor, but when she woke up again, Yu Suyin discovered she had returned to Great Heng, and Liu Jingyao had come back with her!
Yu Suyin: Oh, crap.
Liu Jingyao: (coldly) Just wait. I'll teach you a lesson!
Just as Yu Suyin was wondering how to save her own skin, the two of them suddenly transmigrated back to the modern world.
Yu Suyin: Well, would you look at that!
Liu Jingyao: ???
P.S. A story about an emperor and empress who can't stand each other, hopping back and forth between two worlds. Mostly set in the modern world.
The heroine's soul transmigrates, while the hero transmigrates bodily.
His Majesty is a real pain in the neck, with all the bad habits of a feudal emperor. The heroine will have to teach him how to behave!
